Ararat Rural City Council had previously installed an automated Exeloo toilet, in the town's centre, but it quickly became more of a liability than an asset. Community frustration was growing, and the council was spending more and more on maintenance—particularly due to repeated motherboard failures that required costly specialist repairs. What started as a high-tech solution ended up being an ongoing drain on resources.
Challenges and Project Needs
The council needed a new public toilet building that could offer the same level of amenity—without the headaches. Key requirements included:
- Reliability - Eliminate technology-driven failures that had plagued the previous unit.
- Cost-effectiveness - Reduce ongoing maintenance and repair costs.
- User-friendly design - Keep key features people value, without overcomplicating the experience.
- Community approval - Deliver a solution that locals would support and feel safe using.
Our Solution
Modus Australia supplied the InCube 1 —a prefabricated toilet building designed to be robust, functional and easy to maintain. Unlike traditional automated toilets, the InCube 1 keeps things simple.
It retains premium features like timed lighting, ventilation and high-quality finishes, while removing complex electronics that often lead to faults.
As full service public toilet manufacturers, we managed delivery and installation using our prefabricated modular system, ensuring a quick, low-impact build.
The InCube 1, is designed to resist vandalism and withstand heavy use, making it ideal for public urban area toilet buildings like this.
An Outstanding Result
Since installation, the new facility has been well received by the Ararat community. Locals appreciate the upgraded design, and visitors benefit from a more comfortable, dependable public amenity. The council now has a public toilet solution that’s reliable, looks good, and costs less to maintain—ticking all the boxes for a long-term upgrade. This project highlights how smart, purpose-driven public toilet design can improve local amenity without overengineering the outcome. It’s a practical, community-first result—something we’re proud to have delivered alongside Ararat Rural City Council.
