The Dungog Showground Campsite, located in the picturesque setting of Dungog, NSW, has long been a sought-after spot for campers and visitors looking to enjoy nature. However, the need for modern, durable, and accessible facilities became evident to improve the overall experience. Modus Australia, helped Dungog Shire Council in the design and delivery of a tailored amenity solution, ensuring that the new infrastructure met the unique needs of the site while blending seamlessly into the environment.

Challenges and Project Needs

Consultations with Dungog Shire Council uncovered four primary challenges:

  • Versatile Facilities – The campsite required an all-in-one facility with toilets, showers, and a communal kitchen and shelter area, enhancing visitor convenience.
  • Accessibility & Inclusivity – A fully compliant, DDA-accessible design was necessary to accommodate all users.
  • Ease of Maintenance & Durability – The facility needed robust materials and an easy-to-clean design to withstand frequent use with minimal upkeep.
  • Aesthetic Integration – The building’s design and colour scheme had to complement the natural surroundings of the campsite and nature.

Security Solutions

  • Durable materials – The campsite required an all-in-one facility with toilets, showers, and a communal kitchen and shelter area, enhancing visitor convenience.
  • LED batten lights with day/night sensors – provide enhanced safety and visibility along with reducing carbon footprint
  • Concealed cisterns – were added for a clean and secure environment, reducing maintenance issues and vandalism down the track.

Aesthetics

  • Colour scheme—Pale Eucalypt walls, Classic Cream trims, and Cottage Green doors—harmonises with the surrounding natural environment.
  • Heritage style building—the classic gable-roofed Byron Tourist Village design was chosen specifically to blend in seamlessly into more country rural setting.
  • Ease of maintenance

  • Gaps under walls —were added to allow easier cleaning and improved airflow.
  • High-quality, vandal-resistant materials—including stainless steel fixtures and ribbed mini orb internal walls to ensure long-term durability.
  • Easy-to-clean finishes — were designed in to reduce maintenance requirements for the council and site managers.
  • User comfort

  • Separate male and female sections — were decided during discussions on the floorplan design with dedicated showers and toilet rooms offer privacy and convenience, a common convention in campsites.
  • DDA-compliant amenities—including disabled showers, handrails, and accessible cubicles, cater to all visitors.
  • A fully equipped kitchen and shelter area—was designed in as custom to provide a comfortable communal space for campers..
  • An Outstanding Result

The new Dungog Showground Campsite Amenity Building seamlessly integrates into the campsite, improving the visitor experience with modern, durable, and accessible facilities. Since installation, the facility has received positive feedback from visitors and council members alike, highlighting its thoughtful design, practicality, and contribution to a more enjoyable camping experience.
